KenGen Chairman Joshua Choge flagged off the 21km and 10km run. International stars; Ambassador Tegla Lorupe and Esther Barmasai were among the competitors in the race held at Masinga.

The primary aim of the race is to raise funds for environmental conservation. The Great Dams Race, featured 21-kilometre and 10-kilometre races which saw over 1000 participants.

The routes traversed scenic forest tracks, the dam shoreline and the dam wall, and provided an opportunity for participants to have fun while contributing to a good cause.

Environmental degradation has become an issue of concern globally. The effects of climate change, which is a direct result of environmental degradation due to human activity, are already having a far-reaching impact on humanity with severe weather events being experienced in different parts of the world.'Said KenGen Managing Director & CEO Albert Mugo.

In Kenya, we have in the recent past witnessed severe and frequent droughts and sometimes flooding which have caused untold human suffering. “As a company, KenGen are committed to long-term environmentally sustainable development that is consistent with international standards”, he added.

To achieve this objective, KenGen encourages the promotion of projects and programmes that protect and enhance the environment, hence the decision to organize the Great Dams Race.
We recognize that environmental challenges are bigger than any single organization can handle. We must therefore combine our efforts and resources to surmount the challenges.

Through the Great Dams Race we hope to bring together individuals and organizations to raise resources to expand conservation efforts in the Seven Forks area as well as initiate community-
based environment friendly income generating activities as an alternative to logging and charcoal burning.

Some of the projects that will benefit from funds raised through the race include the Schools' Green Initiative challenge and community woodlot program. These initiatives are designed to encourage environmental consciousness and conservation with a view to ensuring a sustained environment in the future.
